Konrad Coppinger is a studio alias within the Drone Music project, used for pieces made from bowed metal: cymbals, steel rods and sheet metal played with a cello bow and recorded at close range. The resulting tones are rich in inharmonic partials, giving a bell-like, unstable shimmer.
Recordings are layered and pitched down to reveal slow beating inside the metal resonances. The atmosphere is cold, industrial in origin but meditative in effect, with a strong sense of physical vibration. Headphones at low to moderate volume are recommended, as the high partials can be piercing on bright speakers.
