Nurse With Wound is the English project led by Steven Stapleton, who recorded its debut, Chance Meeting on a Dissecting Table of a Sewing Machine and an Umbrella (1979), with John Fothergill and Heman Pathak. The inner sleeve carried a long roll-call of avant-garde and experimental artists, extended on the next album; collectors went on to use this Nurse With Wound list as a shopping guide, and it became a map of underground music in its own right.
For drone music the key work is Soliloquy for Lilith (1988), the first release on Stapleton’s Idle Hole label. Stapleton and Diana Rogerson made it entirely from a feedback loop running through linked effects units, which shifted as they moved around the room, producing long stretches of slow, glowing hum without any conventional instrument. The project has continued for more than four decades, and in 2011 Stapleton reworked the master tapes of Sunn O)))’s debut as Iron Soul of Nothing.
