Fluxus was a loose international network of artists, poets and composers that took its name from the Latin for flowing and its organising energy from the Lithuanian-born designer George Maciunas. After early events at the AG Gallery in New York in 1961, Maciunas staged a festival of new music in the auditorium of the Museum Wiesbaden in 1962, followed by concerts and festivals across Europe. Its works were often brief written instructions, jokes and do-it-yourself actions that blurred the line between performance and everyday life.
For drone music, Fluxus matters because La Monte Young stood close to its centre before the Dream House existed. He edited, with Jackson Mac Low, An Anthology of Chance Operations, designed by Maciunas and published in 1963, and his Composition 1960 #7 consists of nothing but two notes, B and F sharp, sustained for a long time: one of the first scores in which a single held interval is the entire work.
