Dark is the German Netflix series created by Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese, first released in December 2017, in which the disappearance of children exposes the entangled histories of families in a small town across several timelines. Its score is by Ben Frost, while the title sequence uses Goodbye, a 2011 song by Apparat with the Austrian singer Soap&Skin.
Frost wrote much of the music before seeing any edit, working from scripts, treatments, mood boards and conversations with the creators, and gave his tracks deliberately obscure titles so they would not steer the directors. Research into epigenetics and inherited trauma suggested the smeared, gliding textures that run through all three seasons. He recorded a small ensemble from the Sinfonietta Cracovia with close microphones, using techniques such as playing at half speed, lowering the pitch and using fingernails instead of bows, so that the orchestra dissolves into a slow, unstable drone.
