Earth 2, subtitled Special Low Frequency Version, is the 1993 album by the American band Earth, released by Sub Pop and recorded in Seattle in August 1992. Dylan Carlson on guitar and Dave Harwell on bass, with only scattered percussion from Joe Burns on the final piece, stretch three tracks across seventy-three minutes; the longest, Like Gold and Faceted, runs past half an hour.
The record discards almost everything that makes rock move forward. There are no verses and barely any drums, only heavily distorted chords held, repeated and allowed to ring out until the riff becomes a landscape. Its reputation grew steadily in the following years, and it is now widely regarded as the founding record of drone metal: Sunn O))) have said that in their early days they set out to capture the feeling of Earth 2, and Sub Pop reissued it for its thirtieth anniversary in 2023.
