Mica Levi

English composer behind the sliding, microtonal strings of Under the Skin, Jackie and The Zone of Interest, formerly of Micachu and the Shapes.

Mica Levi is an English composer and musician who first came to attention as Micachu, leading the experimental pop group Micachu and the Shapes, before turning to film. Levi’s score for Jonathan Glazer’s Under the Skin (2013), written mainly on viola over about ten months, used bending, microtonal strings to give an alien its voice, and won the European Film Award for best composer.

Levi went on to score Pablo Larraín’s Jackie (2016), a score nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Score, and Levi returned to Glazer for The Zone of Interest (2023), where the score is confined to an overture and a closing piece framing the film’s sound design. Levi has released music on Rough Trade and on Demdike Stare’s DDS label, and has named Giacinto Scelsi and Iannis Xenakis among the influences on Under the Skin, a lineage that links the work to the drone and spectral traditions.
