Ravedeath, 1972 is an album by the Canadian composer Tim Hecker, released by Kranky in February 2011. Most of it was recorded on 21 July 2010 on the pipe organ of the Fríkirkjan, a church in Reykjavík found by Ben Frost, who also engineered the sessions and added piano. Hecker then spent about a month in his Montreal studio reshaping the material, and has described the result as a hybrid of a live and a studio record.
The organ is rarely heard clean: it arrives smeared, distorted and dissolved into roaring masses that evoke both sacred music and a signal breaking down. The date in the title refers to a student stunt at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where a piano was pushed off the roof of the Baker House dormitory in 1972; Hecker licensed the archival photograph and re-photographed it for the cover. The album received some of the strongest reviews of his career.
