The Caretaker was an alias of the English musician James Leyland Kirby, from Stockport, active from 1999 to 2019. The name and the idea came from the haunted ballroom of Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining: the debut, Selected Memories from the Haunted Ballroom (1999), treated old ballroom pop of the 1930s, the kind of music heard in the film, as material to be looped, slowed and wrapped in surface noise.
Over two decades the project turned from a cinematic conceit into a study of memory. An Empty Bliss Beyond This World (2011), issued on History Always Favours the Winners and built from fragments of 78 rpm records, was prompted by research showing that people with advanced Alzheimer’s can still recall music from long ago. The cycle closed with the six-part Everywhere at the End of Time (2016–2019). The work is a touchstone of hauntology, where crackle and repetition stand for the past slipping out of reach.
