Touch is a London-based publisher of sound and visual media created by the designer Jon Wozencroft, who conceived it in 1981, and Mike Harding; the two prefer to describe it as something other than a record label. Its first release, the cassette package Feature Mist, appeared in December 1982 and included a New Order recording handed to them after a concert in Norwich. An early mission statement presented Touch as working across words, music and images at once.
Over four decades Touch has become a key address for field recording, electronic drone and slow-moving composition. Its artists include Chris Watson, Philip Jeck, Fennesz, Jacob Kirkegaard, Jana Winderen, Oren Ambarchi, Biosphere and Hildur Guðnadóttir. Wozencroft’s own photographs and design appear on the covers and give the catalogue its recognisable look, while side projects such as Touch Radio extend its interest in listening beyond the record format.
