Dylan Carlson

American guitarist who founded Earth in Olympia in 1989 and, with Earth 2, slowed heavy guitar riffs down into the first drone metal.

Dylan Carlson is an American guitarist and composer who founded Earth in Olympia, Washington, in 1989, with Slim Moon and Greg Babior. Emerging from the same north-western scene as grunge, Earth took the weight of heavy metal and stretched it out of all proportion, citing La Monte Young as an influence alongside King Crimson and Slayer.

Earth 2 (1993), released by Sub Pop, consists of three tracks spanning about seventy-five minutes of distorted, almost motionless guitar and feedback, and is widely regarded as the founding record of drone metal. After a long silence, Carlson returned in 2005 with Hex; Or Printing in the Infernal Method, a sparser music shaped by country guitar and Ennio Morricone, with the drummer Adrienne Davies at the core of a steadier line-up. Under the name DrCarlsonAlbion he has explored the folklore of the British Isles, a long-standing interest rooted in stories told by his Scottish grandmother.
