Ben Frost is an Australian-Icelandic composer, producer and sound designer who moved from Melbourne to Reykjavík in 2005 and co-founded the label Bedroom Community there in 2006 with Valgeir Sigurðsson and Nico Muhly. Albums such as Theory of Machines (2007) and By the Throat (2009) set heavy, distorted drones against fragile acoustic detail, and Sólaris (2011) was made with the Icelandic composer Daníel Bjarnason.
He has worked with Swans and Björk, written operas including The Wasp Factory, after Iain Banks, and collaborated with the photographer Richard Mosse on installations such as The Enclave. For television he scored all three seasons of the German series Dark and its successor 1899; for the latter he played music through a speaker inside the drained ballast tanks of ships under repair in Reykjavík harbour, using the hulls as reverberation chambers. He often argues that silence in a film can strike harder than a loud cue.
